Hazbin Hotel's Sapphic Relationship: Are They Cute or Nah?

One of the biggest themes in Hazbin Hotel is queer relationships and how different characters navigate them. Most of the characters in the Hellaverse are queer in one way or another, so it would not be surprising to people that most of the relationships in Hazbin Hotel are queer. However, one relationship in the show has the fandom as divided as they are with everything else in the show; Charlie and Vaggie.
Charlie and Vaggie are the main relationship in Hazbin Hotel, and given that we currently only have one season of the show out (I don't count the leaks until the second season is officially out) and only eight episodes, we have not seen much of them as a couple. This is what is dividing the fanbase when it comes to them as a couple. All we have seen of them so far is of them running the hotel together and keeping everyone align to prepare for the extermination. Because of this, many people do not believe that Chaggie is the cute sapphic couple that the cast and crew made them to believe.
To analyze this opinion, we need to look at Charlie and Vaggie as individuals, and as a couple. We also need to look at the content we got, and what could have happened off screen before and during the events of the first season. Let's start with the heart and soul of the show herself, the main character, Charlie Morningstar.
Charlie is the Princess of Hell and the one that found Vaggie after an extermination and took her under her wing. At the time, she thought Vaggie was a homeless sinner that needed a place to stay, so she let her stay at the hotel. From then, a relationship blossomed and they became a dynamic duo. Charlie is already polarizing as a main character with the fanbase, and she is just as polarizing as a girlfriend. Charlie is known for being sunshine in demon form, which balances Vaggie's tough nature. She is kind, optimistic, determined, driven, and has so much love in her heart. With her positive traits, she also has flaws. She is also known to be naive and can sometimes be unaware of how everyone else is feeling in certain situations, be it her girlfriend or anyone else. The one example that most people point out is in episode six, "Welcome to Heaven," when Charlie drags Vaggie to Heaven without asking her if she wanted to go. She just grabbed her and went. This is a flaw in Charlie's character that I hope could be addressed in a future season. While we were unable to get a full-fledged scene addressing this in the first season, there is a possibility this will be addressed later on in the series.
However, while she does have a hard time understanding her friends' boundaries, she also is the type of person that would go above and beyond for all of her friends. After it was revealed that Vaggie was a fallen angel and a former Exorcist, Charlie needed to have some time to gather her thoughts and calm herself before talking to Vaggie again about what happened. She did not want to go into a rage towards her girlfriend about keeping a big secret from her. Talking to Rosie about what happened made Charlie realize that just because Vaggie did not tell her the truth, does not mean that she is a bad girlfriend for doing so. We all make mistakes, so we should own up to them. After seeing Vaggie again at the end of the episode, they forgave each other before the day of the extermination came.

Now, on to Vaggie as an individual character. Vaggie balances Charlie out by being the more level-headed one of the couple. With that level-headedness, she also has a lot of insecurity issues. One of Vaggie's character traits, at least, according to the Wiki, is that she hates herself, and was a loner pretty much her entire life until Charlie came into her life. Because of this, her biggest motivation for doing anything is for Charlie. This was also a big reason why she did not tell Charlie that she was a fallen angel in the first place; because she was scared that Charlie was not going to take it well. Grant you, she was right, but Charlie was clearly more angry that Vaggie lied to her for so long. One of Vaggie's biggest flaws as a character is that if she feels like she failed Charlie, she will also feel like she failed herself as well. Charlie's happiness is her happiness, and at the same time, Charlie's disappointment and anger is her disappointment and anger, and her parts in the number, "Whatever It Takes" shows that. She has relied on Charlie for so long that she was beginning to lose her sense of self.
With her lack of her sense of self, one positive that has come from that was how she was the type to fight for the people she cares about. After Charlie left for Cannibal Town with Alastor, Vaggie made it a priority to not only train for the coming extermination, but also show Charlie that she will still be fighting for her, no matter how angry she is at her and how much she fucked up by lying to her. This was when Vaggie decided to train with Carmilla Carmine for the coming extermination. Just like Charlie having a heart-to-heart with Rosie, Vaggie's heart-to-heart came as a training session with Carmilla during her number, "Out for Love." During that training, Vaggie realizes that fighting for and alongside Charlie will improve her motivation to protect Charlie and the hotel, and after the number is over, she earns her wings back.

Now that we breifly looked at Charlie and Vaggie as individuals, let's look at them as a couple. As I mentioned before, the biggest challenge they faced as a couple was when it was revealed in the sixth episode that Vaggie was a fallen angel and was an exorcist. When both girls had their separate heart-to-hearts with their respecitve Overlords, they were able to make up and focus on the extermination again. With only one season that is only eight episodes long, we have not seen much of Charlie and Vaggie as a couple. This is the biggest reason why a lot of people do not see Chaggie as a "good" representation of a sapphic couple or having any chemistry altogether. This is one of the worst arguments I have seen in regards to Chaggie as a couple because, as Charlie mentioned in the seventh episode, they had three years under their belt and there was a lot that could have happened off screen. Now that season two is currently in postproduction and we are confirmed to get seasons three and four, there is a good chance we are going to be seeing a lot more Chaggie in those seasons. Even Erika Henningsen, Charlie's voice actress, has confirmed in an interview that Charlie and Vaggie are going to be having a "fun and sexy song" in season two.
There is a lot of weakness in the argument that Charlie and Vaggie have no chemistry also because of how well both characters balance each other out. Charlie is optimistic, fun, kind, silly, and overall sunshine in demon form. Vaggie is tough, level-headed, strong, badass, and down-to-earth... or Hell in this case. Charlie has the ability to let out a more fun and sillier side to Vaggie, and Vaggie has the ability to let out a stronger and more level-headed side to Charlie. People tend to say that opposites attract, and Charlie and Vaggie are the opposites that most definitely attract. The two have such a certain spark to them that a lot of people cannot see, but lots of other people can.

Overall, I see Chaggie as a cute sapphic couple. We still have at least three more seasons to see how their relationship will blossom and grow. I am hoping we will see more of Charlie and Vaggie in the future and have more episodes that will focus on them as individuals and as a couple. Just because we have not seen much of them now does not mean that we will not see more of them in the future seasons. I am hoping to see more of them being more intimate and snuggling with each other in future seasons. Charlie and Vaggie have a lot of potential as a couple, and we will hopefully get that later on.
